Tracey Thorn Thursdays: I Was A Marine Girl: Kurt, Courtney, LCD & Me By Tracey Thorn

In 1994, eleven years after the Marine Girls split up, I was appearing on Later with Jools Holland, performing with Massive Attack. Also on the show that night was Courtney Love with her band Hole. Widely regarded at the time as something of a loose cannon, she was the focus of all attention in the studio that day, and when the bands gathered on their respective sets for the filming there was a sense that all eyes were on her, mine included. Just before the cameras started rolling she looked across to our stage, put down her guitar and strode across the empty central area to crouch down next to me. "Hey", she said, "you're Tracey from the Marine Girls! Kurt and I were both huge fans of your band" (he was not long dead at this point) - "y'know, Kurt always wanted to do a cover of that song of yours, ‘In Love’. More or less speechless, I managed to mumble something polite in return, before she strode back and the show continued.

At the time I'm not sure I entirely believed her. It was one of those bizarre showbiz encounters that happen from time to time, where things are said, and you're never quite sure how much of it is true. What I pieced together later was that it was a distant old friend of ours called Calvin Johnson who had carried the Marine Girls' legacy to Portland, Oregon - first by forming a band almost entirely in our image, called Beat Happening, (whose records he had sent me during the 80s), and then by being part of the label Sub Pop which ultimately signed Nirvana. He had played Beach Party to Kurt and Courtney, along with things like the Raincoats and Kleenex.

The whole unlikely story only finally became real for me when Kurt Cobain's Journals were published in 2002, and I was able to see for myself, in his own handwriting, our appearance in his many lists of favourite bands. There are the Marine Girls on page 128 and page 241, while on page 77, in a list of his favourite songs, are two of mine, Honey and In Love. Most incredibly, on page 271 Beach Party is listed as one of Nirvana's Top 50 albums, along with the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and Public Enemy.

Fast forward to May 2010, now a full TWENTY-SEVEN years after the demise of the Marine Girls. I am back on Jools Holland's Later, this time performing as a solo artist, and also on the show are the current incarnation of all things hip and New York - LCD Soundsystem. I'm sitting watching them set up to do their song, when a member of the band looks up and sees me, strides across to where I'm sitting and says - yeah you guessed it - "I just HAVE to tell you, I have always been such a huge fan of the Marine Girls ..."

This is clearly going to be a recurring theme of my life, and it is of course a wonderful thing, and makes me very proud, but it does just beg the question, what on earth is it, or was it, about the Marine Girls that means we cast this long and somewhat unlikely shadow? We only ever really performed a handful of proper gigs, and released two albums, which went on to sell something in the region of 50,000 copies each, and so we might have expected to be forgotten fairly quickly. But in fact the opposite has happened, and in that mysterious late-night obsessive world of the internet we have become a somewhat seminal post-punk DIY band, more revered now than we ever were at the time. Those who loved us, you see, loved us deeply and enduringly, and those who understood the singular nature of the music we made, saw themselves reflected and represented in our refusal to adhere to either mainstream pop or underground rock ‘n’ roll rules. We conducted ourselves as though none of those rules existed, or as if they simply didn't apply to us, and when I spoke to Alice Fox (singer) recently, she said to me that she thought we were "radical and brave", and I can see what she means.

We used to get up on stage in front of mostly male crowds who'd come to see a rock gig, and we'd quietly but defiantly play our heartfelt songs about boys we loved or boys we despised, mixing in strange and ever-so-slightly random references to the sea. We had no drummer, but hit little wood-blocks, often not in time with each other, Alice and I sang separately, and sometimes together, and not always in tune with each other. But it was artless and sincere, not arch. We made no fetish of our shortcomings, in fact mostly trying our best to overcome them. What you hear on record is the sound of us trying our very best to sound like a band, but most of the time we sounded like nothing and nobody else around. We created an almost magical sense of other-worldliness, hand-built our own little universe, and when audiences were allowed a glimpse of it, often they were entranced.

In all honesty, the Marine Girls were probably one of those bands who could only ever have lasted for a couple of albums. Our split was perhaps the most rock ‘n’ roll thing we ever did, in that in took place in a dressing room, after a fraught gig at which we were heckled, and was not without acrimony. We were very young, so the aftermath was poorly handled by all of us, and it was years before we ever talked to each other about it, and made our peace with the mess we'd made. Still, all that said, there is a kind of perfection in us having split up just when we did, leaving a legacy of a more-or-less entirely uncompromised version of indie-pop.

A few weeks ago woostercollective posted a call for artists to assist in a massive mural in Washington DC, sponsored by the fantastic nonprofit group Albus Cavus.

The final wall is absolutely stunning. But to show how ignorant some people can be, we heard today that the local Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Marshall Phillips is now protesting the mural because, according to him, for it to be acceptable it needs to include references to MLK, the Redskins football team, and the Nationals baseball team.

All I know is that Albus Cavus, a nonprofit was given $100,000 to make this mural happen and hire artists. How many artists actually got paid?

MIA ZAPATA of "The Gits" RIP 1965-1993

Career
In the fall of 1986, she helped co-found The Gits while attending Antioch College, a liberal arts college located in Yellow Springs, Ohio. In 1989, Zapata, along with the rest of The Gits, relocated to Seattle. The band released a series of well-received singles on local indie labels from 1990 to 1991. In 1992, the band released its debut album Frenching the Bully, and received good reviews. Their reputation progressively increased before the band entered the studio in 1993 to begin work on their second album Enter: The Conquering Chicken.

Death
On the morning of July 7, 1993, around 1:00 a.m., Zapata left the Comet Tavern bar in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle. She went down the street to the apartment of a friend. She left around 2:00 a.m., telling her she was going home. This was the last she was seen alive. She may have walked a few blocks West to get a cab, North to a friends apartment, or decided to walk home.
She was raped and murdered in the Central District. It is believed she encountered her murderer shortly after 2:15 am. Since the barkeep remembered her wearing her headset as she left, it is believed she was listening to music from her walkman and thus was unaware of the approaching danger.[1]
According to Unsolved Mysteries, a man two blocks from the Comet Tavern heard a scream around 3 am. A woman found her body in the street at around 3:30 am near the intersection of 24th and Yesler in the Central District neighborhood. Her body was in a Christ-like position (arms stretched out, perpendicular to her body) which gave rise to the belief that it was cult killing. According to the medical examiner, if she had not been strangled she would have died from the internal injuries suffered from the beating.
Mia Zapata is interred at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.

Legacy
In the aftermath of her murder, friends created a self-defense group called Home Alive, which exists to this day. Home Alive has organized benefit concerts and CDs with the participation of many of Seattle's music elite, such as Nirvana (one of lead singer Kurt Cobain's final public appearances), Pearl Jam, Heart, and the Presidents of the United States of America. Joan Jett also recorded an album with the surviving members of The Gits called Evil Stig ("Gits Live" backwards). The Home Alive group has its own instructors. They hold a range of courses, from anger management and use of pepper spray to the martial arts.[2]
Portland, Oregon-based alternative rock band Everclear dedicated their 1993 album World of Noise to Zapata.
Punk rock band 7 Year Bitch, who were good friends and briefly label mates of The Gits, named their 1994 album ¡Viva Zapata! in tribute to Mia Zapata. The album cover also featured a painting by artist Scott Musgrove featuring Zapata wearing bullet sashes (bandoliers). The song "M.I.A.," which explicitly deals with Zapata's death, appears on this album.
Zapata was also one of the featured artists in the 1996 grunge documentary movie Hype!.
In 2005, a documentary The Gits Movie was produced on her life, The Gits and the Seattle music scene. Its first showing occurred at the Seattle International Film Festival in May of that year. Another version of the film appeared two years later at the 2007 SXSW (South By Southwest) Film Festival, and the final cut of the film was released theatrically in over 20 North American cities on July 7, 2008, the 15th memorial anniversary of Zapata's death. The following day saw the film released on DVD along with a Best of the Gits CD (both from Liberation Entertainment).

The Murderer
Florida fisherman Jesus Mezquia was linked to the crime in 2003 when a DNA profile was extracted from a saliva sample left on Zapata's body. It had been kept in cold storage until the STR technology was developed for full extraction. An original entry in 2001 failed to generate a positive result but Mezquia's DNA entered the national databank CODIS after he was arrested in Florida for burglary and domestic abuse in 2002.Mezquia was originally born in Cuba, one of thousands of refugees who came to Florida as a result of Fidel Castro's Mariel Boatlift. Mezquia had an extensive criminal record in Cuba. He was one of many such criminals (about 2000) who were released from Cuban jails by Fidel Castro in order to go to Florida from Mariel. Mezquia lived in Seattle at the time of the murder, and his home address was about three blocks from where her body was found.He had a history of violence toward women, including domestic abuse, burglary and assault and battery. All of his ex-girlfriends and his wife had filed reports against him. There was also a report of indecent exposure on file against him in Seattle within two weeks of Zapata's murder. However there was no known prior link between Mezquia and Zapata.Mezquia never testified in his own defense and still maintains his innocence. The theory is that he saw her leave the bar or some 20 minutes afterwards and followed her at small distance before he struck. Her headset covered her ears so she was unaware until he grabbed her and dragged her to his car where he brutally assaulted her in the back seat. After strangling her, he dragged her body out of the car from under her shoulders, thus the Christ-like position in which her body was found.A jury convicted Mezquia of Zapata's murder on March 25, 2004, and he was sentenced to 36 years in prison. The case was featured on Investigators, Forensic Files, Unsolved Mysteries, American Justice, City Confidential, I, Detective, and 48 Hours. His sentence was overturned by the Washington Court of Appeals but was resentenced to 36 years in 2009.

OYA Music Festival, Norway.

Yo Majesty!
Quite simply saved the festival's last day. By this time, Lady Sov had disappointed so greatly (see below) that I feared the other-wise epic festival ending with a faint poof!. Instead, the two lesbos from Tampa (the one that never shows up didn't this time either) got onstage and tore a giant vagina into the Norwegian landscape. Compared to Sov's endlessly mocking the Norwegians for being white (duh), Yo Maj came out and embraced the crowd with the kind of glowing appreciation that you cannot fake. I don't get it - a white chick from Europe can't handle all these Caucasians, but a group of lesbian sisters from the ghettos of central Florida were't fazed? Hmmm. Few were there at the beginning, but track after track of their romping Miami bass drew peoplein, and nobody left, until their last song when about 2,000 people were screaming for an encore... and got it. Amazing. Fitting that Sov showed up half-way during the set and stood backstage, glasses on, anxiously puffing on a cigarette, watching the madness elevate. As Shunda K rapped in front of the stage, waving her Toys "R" Us scepter over the mesmerized crowd, you could almost see Sov reluctantly passing the baton of Future Rap Queen over to the crew... even if it was a toy scepter.

Started off strong with a lengthy dub set intro from her DJ, which ended up being the highlight of her set. As the anticipation built, I thought, "Wow, Sov's finally learning how to work a crowd!" Wrongo. The midget comes out and within two minutes stops the music and goes, "My god, I just realized how many white people there are here!" Cheers and laughter. A song later, "No really, I've never seen so many white people before!" Less cheers, smattering of laughter. Another song, another comment, ever less cheering, all finally culminating with, "It's kinda scary, actually." Crickets. I dunno, call me a Nazi, but since when is there something wrong with being white? Retard, don't you realize you're in fucking NORWAY?! Nevermind the fact the you're white, but thats like playing Nigeria and going, "My god, there are a lot of black here - kinda scary!" Whatever. The people spoke by wandering away in droves, with me overhearing some kid say, "That was the most awkward concert moment ever."

If you haven't experienced Joy tea by Tazo, then you truly, haven't experienced joy. Only released during the holiday season and most conveniently acquired at any local starbucks, this blend of black, oolong and green teas is smooth with warm aroma, it's comforting... and in my opinion is best enjoyed with a couple splashes of whole milk to add some body and 1-2 lumps or sugar. You crazy kids who absurdly like raw sugar, you might need more but, I'm no health nut, I like bleached sugar kill me... Okay, I don’t want this to sound epic, but while creating 10 albums between 1982 and 2000, Tracy Thorne (12/06/62) and Ben Watt (09/26/62) of Everything But The Girl (EBTG) thoroughly confused their fans. They accomplished what many musicians could only dream: selling hundreds of thousands of albums, but somehow doing it in a way that challenged their listeners to journey with them through decades of inconsistency.
Initially releasing a smattering of albums consisting of what many consider to be “folksy-acoustic” but what I think to be “acid-jazz / light-jazz / female lead / adult contemporary,” EBTG transitioned ungracefully at the end of their career toward female lead drum n’ bass electronic with heavy house and ambient influences. It was in 1994 when the English duo released Amplified Heart and they garnered their first listen by many soon-to-be-fans, including myself. However, it wasn’t until 1996 and their release of Walking Wounded that EBTG would thoroughly confound their following . . . and the WORLD. Influenced heavily by “Massive Attack,” Thorne was quoted as saying, “Even we got a bit bored with what we were doing [previous to Walking Wounded]. We felt, for the time being, we’d gone as far as we possibly could doing what we were doing. With this new material, it is like hearing a new group.”
Indeed, Tracy, it is. Walking Wounded: totally a gateway album. Watt, on the brink of death due to a rare intestine disease, programmed beats and organized much of the science-music production of the album. Thorne added her classic vocals to the electronic mix in a less-ben-gibbard/more-mia-doi-todd fashion and Walking Wounded was in the can. However, it didn’t sell – it didn’t sell compared to the previous outings of easy listening that the couple had bequeathed to the public.
Yet, the faux inaccessibility thought harrowing and scandalous by many proved breathtakingly necessary by at-the-time novice electronic music listeners like me. To this day I listen to this album several times per week. I have secret friends whom I identify with in relation to this album, this band.
Ben Watt is still alive. He only has three feet of intestine left. Everything But The Girl produced one follow-up to Walking Wounded called Tempremental, after which the group decided – amicably – to work on other projects. Watt co-founded the West London night club, Lazy Dog, where he was rumored to DJ on a regular rotation. He now runs a record label called Buzzin’ Fly Records, which seems to focus on saxophone-based electronica. The group, graciously, has left their amazingly vintage website online.
When I started listening to EBTG, I had just been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Somehow listening to this band in my headphones in hospital rooms and reading Ben Watt’s book about his fight with disease helped me think of music in a new way. Indeed, it helped me get more into experimentation in music. EBTG brought a mildly-progressive approach to electronic vocalist music that deserves recognition of being The Greatest Band of All Time.

There's been no announcement by the media yet, but by looking over the decision it appears as though the court has ruled same-sex marriage must be permitted. In that case, WE WON!

Here's the language from the decision that seems most telling:

Accordingly, in light of the conclusions we reach concerning the constitutional questions brought to us for resolution, we determine that the language of section 300 limiting the designation of marriage to a union “between a man and a woman” is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute, and that the remaining statutory language must be understood as making the designation of marriage available both to opposite-sex and same-sex couples.
In
addition, because the limitation of marriage to opposite-sex couples imposed by section 308.5 can have no constitutionally permissible effect in light of the constitutional conclusions set forth in this opinion, that provision cannot stand.
Plaintiffs are entitled to the issuance of a writ of mandate directing the appropriate state officials to take all actions necessary to effectuate our ruling in this case so as to ensure that county clerks and other local officials throughout the state, in performing their duty to enforce the marriage statutes in their jurisdictions, apply those provisions in a manner consistent with the decision of this court. Further, as the prevailing parties, plaintiffs are entitled to their costs.

Mishka NYC Launches Summer 08' Mishka X Richard Kern

To launch its Summer '08 Collection, Mishka will be unveiling a special capsule with internationally recognized photographer and culturally provocative filmmaker & video director Richard Kern. Composed of 4 striking portraits, the collection will offer buyers an intimate glimpse into some of Kern’s most infamous and adored female subjects.

Born in 1954, Richard Kern is a widely acclaimed portrait artist who first came to prominence as a part of the underground cultural explosion in NYC's East Village during the 1980s. Through his erotic films, featuring underground rock icons such as Lydia Lunch, Kembra Pfahler and Henry Rollins, Kern explored a deep interest in the aesthetics of extreme sex, violence and perversion. Often referred to as one of the fathers of Cinema of Transgression, Kern's genius behind the lens led to further work with artists like Sonic Youth, King Missile and Marilyn Manson.

In the 1990s, Kern's focus turned almost exclusively to still photography revolving around glamour, bondage and fetish models. He has since published 9 books of his unique photography including New York City Girls and is a regular contributor to a variety of international publications. Most recently, he also stars in Shot by Kern, a VBS. TV series for VICE Magazine that accompanies him on shoots at his Manhattan Studio.

Printed on 4 simple colors, the Kern for Mishka capsule illuminates the story of some of his most intriguing models including Lung Leg, a prominent scenster of the 1980s akin to Edie Sedgwick, that Kern can be accredited with discovering. To properly capture the collection, Mishka invited renowned erotic photographer Ellen Stagg – also a former Kern model – to shoot the special Look Book. Very much a disciple of Richard Kern, Ellen's portfolio includes clients like VHI Publicity, I-D, Life, Mass Appeal, The Fader, MTV, Vogue, Interview and VICE Magazine to name a few.

To this day, Kern remains a quintessential element of what makes NYC's art, film and music scenes so influential, inspiring and truly timeless. The collection featuring his work will be available at the Mishka Pop Up Shop in Williamsburg and other select stockists starting mid May.
